I fundamentally believe that the theatre is a space for everyone and everyone. All human beings have a story to tell, and though we come from different backgrounds and have different lived experiences, we all share the capacity to love, to connect, and to be one with ourselves and our emotions. I also know that marginalized groups have had their stories suppressed and ignored for generations. I believe in equity in the theatre and in an ever-changing, inclusive theatre community.
Whether directing a musical, new play, devised performance piece, or classical work, I always approach the text with a sense of respect for what it is and a willingness to dive into the heart of the piece. I consider universal themes as well as lived experiences and approach all characters with empathy first. I love to incorporate physical storytelling into my directing, working collaboratively with actors to create character physicality, movement, and choreography that propels the story forward. I pay close attention to written text, historical context, and dramaturgy, and try to always connect the story with aspects of our modern life and what we connect to as human beings today.
I believe that theatre was always meant to be a team effort, and that the process is inherently more valuable than the product. I consider all production and performance roles equal in important and integral parts of the creative process. When working with actors, I believe all great performance work begins with the full authentic self first.
